Dead tree stumps can invite pests

Why is it Important to Remove a Tree Stump?

Did you know that termites love dead trees more than living ones because of the dead cellulose found in dead trees? Interestingly, termites are the only known creatures that can ingest dead cellulose. To a homestead, this is dangerous. But to forests, this very aspect prevents forest fires as termites clear the dead trees which could be super-spreaders of fire.

A tree stump sitting in your yard is not only an eyesore. It can be an invitation for wood-eating pests to infest your land. Wood-eating pests and those that like to tunnel through wood, such as termites and carpenter ants, may see your tree stump as the perfect place to make their home or nest. Unfortunately, these pests will not remain in the stump for long.

These types of pests can outgrow the stump as they multiply or will go out in search of food and water. Often times, your home is close by, which lures them in. These pests can then move from the tree stump, to your home, where they can do a great deal of damage. Removing the tree stump and the root system decreases the risk of these pests making your home their home. Read more from Branched Out….

Stumps can regrow into trees

Why is it Important to Remove a Tree Stump?

As hard as you may think it is, a tree stump can eventually grow back into a mature tree as the roots of the tree still exist. This means that you shouldn’t be content with the tree being cut, you should go the extra mile to kill the stump or to remove it in its entirety. If for example, you had removed the tree to clear up your yard, this will bring you back to square one.

Even if you can’t see it, many stumps lead to new, tiny tree sprouts just below the surface. When those start to emerge, they can lead to lots of small trees growing in and around the stump—not ideal.

Not only are these trees tough to remove permanently—often you need chemicals to kill them and future shoots—but, while they’re growing, they pull nutrients from nearby plants, trees and shrubs. Not only does that hinder growth in the plants you want, but it impacts the entire look and feel of your outdoor space. Read more from Mister Tree Services…

As you’ve seen above, the tree stump may look harmless but it brings its share of harm to your home. You don’t want termites infesting it and spreading to your home. To prevent this, the best method is to remove the remaining part of the tree together with the roots. This is what is called Stump removal.

A small- to medium-sized stump can be removed by good old-fashioned muscle work. But larger stumps can involve so much work that it’s not practical—unless you can drag it out of the earth with a chain attached to the back of a pickup. For larger stumps, use the chemical method instead. A useful tool for manual removal is a mattock, which has a broad end for digging and a sharpened end for slicing. Everyone has favorite tools to use, though, and the more various digging and cutting tools you have on hand, the better. For larger stumps, you may want to enlist the aid of a helper or two to speed the work.

For those who are not up to the physical effort, or have a tree stump is too large to remove by hand, there is an easier—though much slower—method.. Read more from The Spruce…
