Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation celebrates the successes of the Clean California initiative introduced last year

Since the inception of the Clean California initiative introduced by Governor Newsom last year, sponsors working with Adopt a Highway Maintenance Corporation (AHMC) have cleaned up over 220,000 pounds of litter and debris from highways across California, contributing to the 12,700 tons of trash removed overall.

Adopt a Highway’s sponsors funded regular litter removal from hundreds of highway miles in high density areas across California, from San Diego to San Francisco.

“We applaud Caltrans’s commitment to beautifying California,” said AHMC President, Patricia Nelson. “There is a very noticeable improvement in the appearance of California’s roadways, and we are grateful to partner with them on the Clean California initiative. Sponsors and volunteers alike have made a significant, positive impact this past year, and will continue to do so.”

The Clean California initiative introduced in July of 2021, included a $250 rebate through the Adopt a Highway Program to further incentivize companies and individuals in California to be involved in the cleaning of California’s highways. Since the rebate was introduced last year, Adopt a Highway has seen an increase of highway adoptions by more than 800 participants according to Caltrans.

“With the rebate offered by the Clean California initiative, there has never been a better time to participate in the Adopt a Highway’s sponsorship opportunities. Companies across California are doing their part to safeguard the environment and state aesthetics by sponsoring the cleaning of sections of highway,” stated Patricia.

The Adopt a Highway program was introduced in California in 1990. Since then, the program has expanded to 25 states resulting in the removal of trash from hundreds of miles of highways across the nation. Over 2 million pounds of litter have been collected from California alone since the program’s inception.

Companies looking to take advantage of the Adopt a Highway rebate featured in the Clean California initiative can get involved by going onto the California Adopt A Highway website.
